30  Using Markers

Figure 30.1: Markers placed along the timeline act as navigational breadcrumbs.

When you’re working through a long solo or a really complex passage in a song, it’s easy to get lost or feel overwhelmed. You might think “I’m struggling with that tricky part in the middle,” but rather than letting yourself get stuck it would be nice if you could “put a pin in it” and either skip past it for now, or return to it on another day.

Markers let you drop “breadcrumbs” throughout the song—quick reference points that mark the beginning of phrases, tricky licks, or simply where you stopped during your last session. Unlike regions, markers are single points in time that help you navigate and organize your learning.

Combined with the Transcription Playhead, markers let you work through a solo systematically: jump to a marker, work on decoding the phrase or lick, then move to the next marker once you’re ready. This keeps you organized without constantly hunting for “that part I was working on.”
